Checking the weather in Canillo has a catch: the village sits at the bottom of the valley and the slopes are much higher up, in the Forn area, which you reach by gondola. What you see from your hotel window is not always what you will find on the snow. In this guide we explain what the weather in Canillo is like through the season, what to check before you go up and where to find the official snow report and live webcams.
What the Weather Is Like in Canillo
Canillo is one of the seven sectors of Grandvalira, a ski area with 215 skiable km ranging from 1,710 to 2,640 metres in altitude. You reach the slopes on an eight-seater gondola that leaves from the village itself and climbs up to the Vall del Forn, so within a few minutes you go from valley weather to mountain weather.
That difference in altitude explains situations that are very common in winter: rain or sleet in the village while it snows up top, or fog in the valley with sunshine above the clouds. The opposite also happens: a calm day down below can come with wind in the high areas. That is why, when deciding whether to go up, the Forn webcam and the slope status are more useful than looking at the sky from the street.
The sector is one of the most popular with families and beginners, and it is linked to El Tarter and the rest of the ski area. If the weather turns bad in Canillo, you can move to other sectors as long as the connecting lifts are open.
Canillo Weather by Season
December: Start of the Season
Grandvalira plans to open the 2026/27 season on 4 December, always subject to the weather and snow. In the first few weeks the whole ski area is not usually open, and the snow depends largely on snowmaking: according to the resort, snow cannons cover 66% of the skiable area. Check what is open in Canillo before you book.
January and February: Midwinter
These are usually the coldest months, with the best-preserved snow. This is also when storms with wind and fog can move in. For families with young children, a day of intense cold or strong wind may be better spent on indoor activities or skiing only in the morning.
March and April: Spring
The days get longer and the sun is warmer. The snow is usually hard first thing and soft by midday, so it pays to start early. There may be no snow left in the village even though skiing continues as normal up top. Grandvalira's planned closing date is 4 April 2027, also depending on the snow.
What to Check Before Going Up to Canillo
- Canillo gondola: it is the gateway to the sector; confirm its opening hours and that it is running.
- Wind at high altitude: it can close exposed chairlifts even if it is a fine day in the village.
- Visibility: in fog, stick to easy, familiar slopes, especially if you are skiing with children.
- Road: Canillo is on the CG-2, about 20 minutes from Andorra la Vella; on snowy days carry chains or use winter tyres.
- Open slopes and lifts: the best summary of what the day will be like.
