How It Snows in Sierra Nevada
Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in Europe and it doesn't snow the way it does in the Pyrenees. The big snowfalls come with Atlantic storms moving in from the southwest and with cut-off lows (DANA), which can drop a lot of snow in one or two days. North-wind days tend to be cold and clear: good for skiing, bad for building up snow.
That's why the season depends on a few big snow events, and why the resort has an extensive system of snow cannons that keeps the main runs open even when little snow falls.
The Three Altitudes You Need to Watch
- Pradollano (2,100 m): the base, where the hotels, car parks and shops are. It's the first to see rain if the snow line rises.
- Borreguiles (2,650 m): the heart of the resort and the beginners' area. It's the reference altitude for snow quality.
- Veleta (3,300 m): the upper area. The best snow when there is some, but also the first to close when the wind blows.
How to Read the Snow Forecast
- 🌡️ 0 °C isotherm (freezing level): below that altitude it snows; above it, it can rain. If it's above 2,100 m, it will rain in Pradollano even while it snows in Borreguiles.
- ❄️ Forecast centimetres: more than 10 cm is a good snowfall; more than 20 cm, a powder day.
- 💨 Wind: in strong gusts, the high Veleta lifts close first; on those days you ski mainly in Borreguiles.
- ☀️ Sun after the snowfall: the best time to ski is the morning after a snowfall under clear skies; from midday the snow changes in the sun.
