☀️ Why the weather in Sierra Nevada is unlike any other resort

Sierra Nevada is the southernmost ski resort in Europe, and that completely changes how you need to read the forecast. Four particularities worth understanding:

  • More than 300 days of sunshine a year. Skiing under clear skies is the norm here. The practical consequence: solar radiation is extremely high even in January and at 2,100–3,000 m. Sunscreen and goggles are not optional.
  • The snow changes throughout the day. With strong sun, the snow starts the day hard and softens towards midday. The first two hours are the best for fast groomed runs; from 13:00 the snow becomes soft and heavy on south-facing slopes.
  • Wind rules at the top. The Veleta area and the upper lifts are the first to close because of wind. If the report forecasts strong gusts, expect to ski mainly in Borreguiles.
  • Temperature inversion with Granada. It's not unusual for Granada to wake up in fog or low cloud while Pradollano, 30 km further up, is in full sunshine. Never decide on the day by looking out of the window in the city: check the webcam.

🌡️ What the temperature is in Sierra Nevada

The resort starts at Pradollano (2,100 m) and climbs to over 3,000 m, with 1,200 m of skiable vertical drop, the biggest in Spain. Between the base and the top there can easily be a 6–8 °C difference, plus the effect of the wind.

  • Pradollano (2,100 m): the mildest level. On sunny days in March you can have lunch on a terrace in short sleeves.
  • Borreguiles (2,600 m): the heart of the ski area. It's the temperature reference for most of your day.
  • Veleta and the upper levels (above 3,000 m): this is where the real cold and wind appear. Go up with one more layer than you think you need.

🎿 Tips for today's weather

☀️ Sunny day (the most common)

Start early: the best snow is between opening time and 12:00. High-factor sun protection, category 3–4 sunglasses and light layers. In the afternoon, look for north-facing slopes, where the snow holds up better.

❄️ Snowing

A powder day, but with flat light. Goggles with a low-light lens and marked or tree-lined slopes. Check in the widget which lifts are still open before heading to the top.

💨 Strong wind

This is the scenario that affects Sierra Nevada most. In strong gusts, the upper lifts and access to Veleta close first. Plan B: stay in the Borreguiles sector, which is more sheltered and has most of the blue and red slopes.

🌫️ Fog or low cloud

It's usually a valley phenomenon. If Granada is covered, check the webcam before writing off the day: above 2,000 m it's very likely to be clear.

🌪️ Saharan dust (calima)

Some episodes of Saharan dust tint the snow ochre and reduce visibility. It isn't dangerous for skiing, but it speeds up snowmelt over the following days: if you were coming for powder, bring your trip forward.

📅 The best time to go to Sierra Nevada based on the weather

  • December and January: the most reliable cold and the best cold-snow conditions, although with short daylight hours.
  • February: the balance. A good snow base, longer days and the highest chance of skiing in sunshine.
  • March and April: Sierra Nevada's famous spring skiing. Pleasant temperatures, hard snow in the morning and soft in the afternoon, and lots of sunshine. It's the best time if you're going with children or you're a beginner.

🏔️ Sierra Nevada at a glance

  • 110 km of skiable terrain and 131 slopes for every level.
  • 1,200 m vertical drop, the biggest in Spain.
  • Base at Pradollano (2,100 m), in the Sierra Nevada National Park, about 30 km from Granada.
  • Long season thanks to the altitude and a powerful snowmaking system.

✅ Now you know the weather: get the day sorted

If the forecast looks good, what saves you the most time when you arrive in Pradollano is having your equipment and lift pass sorted from home. In high season, the queue at the physical shops first thing in the morning can take more than an hour.

❓ Frequently asked questions about the weather in Sierra Nevada

What's the weather like in Sierra Nevada today?

The widget at the top of this page shows the temperature, snow depth, open kilometres and running lifts in real time, with official data from the resort. The webcams give you visual confirmation of the sky.

What is the temperature in Sierra Nevada in winter?

It depends a lot on altitude and wind. The base is at 2,100 m and the top is above 3,000 m, with a typical difference of 6–8 °C between the two. Dress in layers and always carry an extra layer for the top.

Can you ski in Sierra Nevada when it's windy?

Yes, but with limitations: strong wind closes the high-altitude lifts and access to Veleta first. The Borreguiles sector is more sheltered and usually stays open. Check the widget to see how many lifts are open before going up.

When is there most snow in Sierra Nevada?

The greatest snow depths are usually between late January and March. March combines a good snow base with lots of sunshine, which is the resort's hallmark.

If it's cloudy in Granada, is it cloudy in Sierra Nevada?

Very often not. Low cloud and fog are a valley phenomenon, and above 2,000 m it's common to find full sunshine. Always check the webcam before cancelling your day.

How does the sun affect the snow in Sierra Nevada?

A lot. With strong sun the snow starts the day hard and softens over the morning. The best slope conditions are between opening time and midday; in the afternoon, it's better to look for north-facing slopes.
