Grandvalira Weather: Climate and Snow by Sector and by Season

Caranva Sports. |

Checking the weather in Grandvalira is not as simple as looking up a forecast for Andorra: the ski area is so large that on the same day one sector can be sunny while another has fog or wind. Here we explain how the weather varies between sectors, how the snow changes over the season, what to check before you set off, and where to find the official snow report and the live webcams.

One big ski area, several different weathers

Grandvalira has 215 km of skiable terrain spread across seven sectors: Encamp, Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu, Peretol, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa. Its lowest point is at 1,710 metres and its highest at 2,640, and between one end of the ski area and the other there are valleys facing in different directions. That is why the resort itself publishes the weather separately for two main zones: Soldeu - El Tarter and Grau Roig - Pas de la Casa.

  • Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig: the highest and coldest part of the ski area. They usually hold the snow better, but they are more exposed to wind and poor visibility when a storm comes in.
  • Soldeu and El Tarter: plenty of runs descend through the forest towards the villages, a good alternative on foggy days.
  • Canillo and Encamp: the gateways from the valley. In Encamp, the Funicamp travels 6 km from the town up to Solanelles, at 2,500 metres, so the weather at the bottom and at the top can be very different.
  • Peretol: the access from Bordes d'Envalira, at 1,960 metres, with a chairlift that goes up to Solanelles.

Grandvalira weather through the season

December: the season gets going

The 2026/27 season is scheduled to open on 4 December, always subject to the weather and the snow. At the start it is normal for only part of the ski area to be open. The resort says its snow cannons cover 66 % of the terrain, which helps it open earlier even when there has not been much snowfall, but it is worth checking how many kilometres are open before booking a long weekend.

January and February: the heart of winter

These are usually the coldest months, with the best-preserved snow. They are also when storms can blow in and close the most exposed lifts at altitude. A good trick is to choose your sector according to the day: when it is sunny, head for the high areas; with wind or fog, go for the sectors with forest runs.

March and April: spring snow

More daylight, more sun and snow that changes throughout the day: hard first thing, good by mid-morning and heavy in the afternoon on the lower slopes. At this time of year, the higher parts of the ski area usually hold up better. Closing is scheduled for 4 April 2027, also depending on the snow.

What to check before going to Grandvalira

  • Kilometres and lifts open: a better guide than the forecast to what the day will be like.
  • Wind at altitude: it can close chairlifts and the connections between sectors.
  • Visibility: in fog, look for the forest runs of Soldeu, El Tarter or Canillo.
  • Avalanche risk: a must if you are going off the marked pistes.
  • Road: the climb towards Pas de la Casa is the highest; on snowy days carry chains or fit winter tyres.

Where to see the Grandvalira snow report and webcams

The resort publishes the Grandvalira weather by sector and the official slope status. The country's official forecast comes from the Servei Meteorològic Nacional d'Andorra, which also publishes the snow and avalanche danger bulletin by zone. Its network of automatic weather stations includes three that only operate in winter, located precisely in Grau Roig, Soldeu and Pas de la Casa.

To see the mountain right now, our Grandvalira webcam and snow report page has the ski area's cameras, and the Grandvalira snow report in our app brings it all together. If you want the details for a particular village, check the weather in Soldeu or the weather in Pas de la Casa, and to compare with Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, see our guide to the weather in Andorra by resort.
