If you are checking the weather in La Massana before a ski trip, bear in mind that the town and the slopes are not in the same league. La Massana sits in the valley, but its ski resort, Pal Arinsal, climbs above 2,500 metres. In this guide we explain what the parish's winter climate is like, how the snow changes through the season, what to check before heading up, and where to find the official snow report and the live webcams.

What the weather is like in La Massana

La Massana is the Andorran parish that gives access to Pal Arinsal, a ski resort with more than 63 km of slopes between 1,550 and 2,560 metres of altitude. From the town centre, just 6 km from the centre of the country, a gondola climbs to the Pal sector, rising 675 metres. That jump in altitude is the key to understanding the weather in La Massana.

In winter it is common for the town and the slopes to have very different weather:

  • Rain below, snow above: when a front arrives with mild temperatures, it can be raining in town while it snows on the slopes.
  • Fog in the valley, sun on the peaks: in settled weather, low cloud can sit in the valley floor and leave the slopes clear.
  • Calm below, wind above: a still day in town does not mean it is not blowing in the high, open areas.

That is why, to know what the snow is like, the resort's webcams and snow report are far more useful than the sky you see from your hotel.

Pal, Arinsal or Ordino Arcalís: choosing by the weather

Staying in La Massana gives you room to choose where to ski depending on the day:

  • Pal: with plenty of runs through the forest, it is the easiest option on foggy or windy days. You get there by gondola from the town.
  • Arinsal: with more open high areas, it shines on clear days. It has its own gondola from the village of Arinsal, and a cable car links it with Pal.
  • Ordino Arcalís: in the neighbouring valley, with its base at 1,940 metres and a north-facing aspect, it usually holds the snow well, although it is very open and you feel the wind. You will find the details in our guide to the weather in Andorra by resort.

La Massana weather through the season

December: start of the season

Pal Arinsal is scheduled to open the 2026/27 season on 4 December, always subject to the snow and the weather. At the start not everything is usually open, and it is common for the town to have no snow while people are already skiing higher up.

January and February: the heart of winter

These are usually the coldest months, with the best-preserved snow. Storms with wind and fog can also blow in, so it is worth staying flexible to choose your sector or move a ski day.

March and April: spring

Longer, sunnier days, with snow that transforms throughout the day. It pays to start early and look for the higher slopes in the afternoon. Pal Arinsal is scheduled to close on 4 April 2027, also depending on the snow.

What to check before heading up from La Massana

  • La Massana gondola: check that it is running before you set off; on snowy days it saves you driving the mountain road.
  • Cable car between Pal and Arinsal: if it is closed, you will not be able to switch sectors on skis.
  • Wind and visibility at altitude: what you see in town is no guide.
  • Avalanche risk: essential if you are going off-piste.
  • Road: if you drive up, carry chains or fit winter tyres.

Where to check the weather and snow in La Massana

The official forecast comes from the Servei Meteorològic Nacional d'Andorra, which also publishes the snow and avalanche danger bulletin; in the parish it has automatic weather stations in Arinsal and Les Fonts d'Arinsal. The resort publishes its Pal Arinsal snow report and its official webcams.
