Is Candanchú good for beginners?

¿Es Candanchú bueno para principiantes?

Caranva Sports. |

Yes. Candanchú has one of the best-known beginner areas in the Pyrenees, Pista Grande, which the resort itself highlights as one of the favourites for learning to ski, and its official ski school runs courses for complete beginners only. That said, it isn't a resort of easy slopes: across the Astún-Candanchú area, 65 of the 110 marked runs are red or black, so the first days are spent on Pista Grande.

To get started, ask for the Silver range, designed for those starting out or already skiing green and blue runs: with ski hire in Candanchú the full set costs €28 for one day and €78 for 6 days. You pick it up inside the Hotel SNO Candanchú, right at Candanchú ski resort, and it's fitted to your size and level.

Where to start: Pista Grande

The resort is divided into four areas: Pista Grande, Tobazo, Tuca Blanca and Rinconada. Pista Grande is the beginners' area: the resort describes it as "one of skiers' favourites for getting started in skiing" and Aragón Tourism as one of the best areas in the country for that purpose. It's also the resort's main access point.

Tuca Blanca, at 2,400 metres, is the resort's highest point and is surrounded by rocky mountains; Tobazo is one of its legendary runs. Neither is for your first day: save them for when you're skiing blue runs comfortably.

How many green and blue runs are there?

The resort doesn't publish the breakdown by colour for Candanchú alone. For the joint Astún-Candanchú ski area, covering 101 kilometres, it gives 14 green runs, 31 blue, 35 red and 30 black. With the Astún-Candanchú day pass you can also ski in Astún, reached by the free shuttle bus.

The beginner lift pass

The resort's terms include a beginner lift pass that only gives access to the beginner slopes and lifts, is valid only on the day of purchase and cannot be combined with discounts. If you're going to spend the whole day in the learning area, ask about its price on the website or at the ticket offices before buying a full lift pass.
