What to do in Candanchú besides skiing?

¿Qué hacer en Candanchú además de esquiar?

Caranva Sports. |

Besides skiing, in Candanchú you can go sledging, walk the snowshoe trail, go cross-country skiing on its three Nordic trails and have a drink at the resort's après-ski when the slopes close. 11 kilometres away is Canfranc, with its International Railway Station and guided tours, and about 28 kilometres away, Jaca.

If some of your group ski and others don't, everything is organised from the same place: with ski hire in Candanchú you can add snowshoes to your booking for €14.50 a day (€22 for two days) and collect everything inside the Hotel SNO Candanchú, right at Candanchú ski resort.

At the resort

Sledging

Candanchú has a sledging area that opens at weekends and on public holidays from 11:00 to 16:00. The resort considers it suitable for everyone and asks adults to accompany the youngest children on their runs.

Snowshoeing

The resort has a marked snowshoe trail. It's the easiest way to get around on the snow without knowing how to ski. Don't go up the ski slopes on snowshoes, especially not at the end of the day: at closing time the piste groomers start work and the resort prohibits access.

Cross-country skiing and biathlon

Candanchú has three Nordic skiing trails and a biathlon stadium, as well as an alpine ski racing stadium.

Tubing on Pista Grande

In June a tubing area on Pista Grande was announced, with two lanes of 70 and 80 metres, one with two bends, and a 65-metre covered magic carpet to get back up. The works were well advanced and the plan was to open it this winter, but there is no confirmation that it has been finished: check the resort's website before you go.

Après-ski

When the slopes close, Baramban, the resort's après-ski, opens from 17:00 to 21:00. During the day, the cafés at Pista Grande, La Cleta del Tobazo, La Tuca and the El Txoko terrace let you stop without going down to the village; the last two open only at weekends and on public holidays.

Near Candanchú

Astún, next door

Astún is a few minutes away and the two resorts are linked by a free shuttle bus. With the Astún-Candanchú day pass you can ski at both; if you're spending more days there, there's also ski hire in Astún. The gondola that will link the two resorts won't be ready until the 2027/28 season at the earliest: we cover it in our story on the Astún-Candanchú gondola.

Canfranc and the International Railway Station

11 kilometres away, the Canfranc International Railway Station is the must-see visit in the valley. The Town Council runs guided tours all year round, with limited times and places, so it's best to book in advance at the Canfranc tourist office.

Jaca, San Juan de la Peña and Villanúa

Jaca is about 28 kilometres away along a wide road, with a daily scheduled bus to the resort. From the valley you can also visit the monastery of San Juan de la Peña and the Cueva de las Güixas cave in Villanúa, which Aragón Tourism highlights among the things to do in the area.

A combined day

A plan that works for mixed groups: the skiers collect their equipment at 8:30 and are on the slopes at 9:00; the others do the snowshoe trail in the morning and head down to Canfranc in the afternoon for the guided tour. At closing time, everyone meets up at Baramban. Bear in mind that our Candanchú shop closes from 13:00 to 15:30 (16:00 on Friday and Saturday): if someone stops skiing at midday, they'll have to wait until the afternoon to return their equipment. Cancelling your booking is free up to 24 hours before.
