What to take skiing in Candanchú?

¿Qué llevar para esquiar en Candanchú?

Caranva Sports. |

To ski in Candanchú, pack layered clothing (thermal base, fleece and waterproof jacket and trousers), waterproof gloves, goggles for snowy days, sunglasses and high-factor sun cream: this is high mountain terrain and the Tuca Blanca reaches 2,400 metres. Skis or a snowboard, boots, helmet and poles can be hired there; gloves, goggles and thermal clothing cannot.

If you don't have your own gear, ski hire in Candanchú costs €28 for one day for the full adult set and €78 for 6 days, and you collect it inside the Hotel SNO Candanchú, right at the Candanchú ski resort. That way you travel with a much lighter suitcase.

What the mountain is like in Candanchú

The resort describes itself as "the most alpine ski resort in the Pyrenees, with steep mountains and rugged peaks", right on the border with France. Its highest point, the Tuca Blanca, is at 2,400 metres, at the foot of the Pico Aspe. Up top, the wind and cold can be very different from the base, so it is worth taking one more layer than you think you need and taking it off if it is too much. Before you set off, check the state of the slopes on the Candanchú webcam.

The lifts run from 9:00 to 17:00. At the end of the season there are usually spring hours, from 8:30 to 15:00, with milder days when you can do without the fleece but not the sun cream. The resort is closed on 25 December.

  • Base layer: thermal top and leggings, no cotton.
  • Mid layer: fleece or a light down jacket.
  • Outer layer: waterproof ski jacket and trousers.

  • Waterproof gloves and, if you feel the cold, a thin pair underneath.
