Skiing with children in Candanchú: at what age can they start?

Esquiar con niños en Candanchú: ¿a qué edad pueden empezar?

Caranva Sports. |

In Candanchú, children can start playing in the snow from age 3 at Candanchulandia, the resort's snow garden (ages 3 to 7), and the official ski school takes students in its ski lessons from age 5; weekend courses start at age 6. The resort points out that there is no minimum age for skiing, but recommends always starting with a professional.

Children's equipment is the Junior range: with ski hire in Candanchú the full set costs €18.50 for one day and €49 for 6 days, for both skiing and snowboarding. It's collected inside the Hotel SNO Candanchú, right at Candanchú ski resort.

At what age can they start skiing?

The resort sums it up by age in its help centre:

  • Ages 2 to 3: skiing has to be a game. That's what the snow garden instructors are there for.
  • Ages 4 to 6: they're more independent and can start lessons on the slopes with instructors.
  • From age 7, with previous experience: time to learn technique, pick up speed and move up a level.

In practice, Ski School Candanchú sets the minimum age for its lessons at 5 and for its group courses at 6.

Candanchulandia snow garden

This is the resort's area for the youngest children. It has a wooden cabin with a play room, crafts, reading and film screenings, a changing table, toilets and a dining area, and outside, a 40-metre magic carpet on a 2,700 m² slope where they play with and without skis: snow mushrooms, hoops, sledges and loungers. It doesn't include ski lessons, which are booked separately, or food: you can bring their own and they eat in the cabin. They must wear snow clothing, gloves and goggles.

Hours: half day from 9:00 to 12:30 or from 13:00 to 16:30, and full day from 9:00 to 16:30. The 2025/26 prices, pending the new ones:

Snow garden Full day Half day
1 day €55 €42
2 days €103 €73
3 days €137 €101
5 days €210 €132

On the minimum age, the snow garden's page says ages 3 to 7 and the resort's help centre says 2 to 7. If your child is 2, confirm beforehand by calling the snow garden (622 357 913). The resort doesn't advertise a crèche for babies: its childcare service is the snow garden.

Children's lift pass in Candanchú

When buying a day pass, the resort distinguishes between child (ages 6 to 11) and adult (ages 12 to 64). Season passes also have a toddler category, up to and including age 5. The 2026/27 children's day pass price has not been published yet: check it on the Astún-Candanchú website. Bear in mind that children can only ride the chairlift accompanied by an adult, and that the resort allows children from one year old on the lifts as long as they're with an adult.

Other things to do with children in the snow

Candanchú's sledging area opens at weekends and on public holidays from 11:00 to 16:00; the resort asks adults to accompany the youngest children on their runs. For this season, a tubing area on Pista Grande was announced in June, with two lanes of 70 and 80 metres and a covered magic carpet; when the news came out, the works were well advanced, but there is no confirmation that it has been finished. The resort's toilets have baby-changing facilities.
