💨 How to Read the Weather in Formigal (and Why Wind Is the Key)
Formigal is in the Valle de Tena (Huesca), in the Aragonese Pyrenees, with the French border just to the north at the Portalet. That location explains almost everything about its weather:
- Wind is the number one factor. Formigal is an open resort with exposed high-altitude areas. North and west winds can close lifts in the highest, most exposed areas long before snow runs short. It's the first thing to check in the snow report.
- North-facing, snow that lasts. A good part of the ski area faces north, so the snow keeps better and for longer than at sunnier resorts.
- Plenty of Atlantic fronts. Storms coming in from the Cantabrian Sea dump plenty of snow on the Valle de Tena: snowfalls tend to be generous, but they come with wind.
- Four valleys, four microclimates. Sextas, Sarrios, Portalet and Anayet don't have the same day. With a north wind, the inner valleys (Sextas and Sarrios) are much more sheltered than the Portalet area.
🌡️ What's the Temperature in Formigal?
The resort runs from 1,145 m at the base to 2,250 m at the top, a little over 1,100 m of vertical drop. The difference between the base and the top is around 5–7 °C, but with wind the wind chill up top can drop much further.
- Base level (1,145–1,500 m): the mildest part. In spring the snow can turn soft by mid-morning.
- Mid level (1,500–1,900 m): where you ski most of the day and where the snow report is most representative.
- Upper level (up to 2,250 m): the real cold and wind. Go up with a hood, neck warmer and goggles.
🎿 Tips for Today's Weather
💨 Strong Wind
The most common scenario in Formigal. In strong gusts, the high-altitude lifts and exposed areas close first. Plan B: Sextas and Sarrios, the most sheltered valleys, which is also where most of the blue runs and family areas are.
❄️ Snowing
A fresh-snow day, but with flat light in the open areas. Look for sections with visual references and bring a low-light lens. Check in the widget which lifts are still running before you go up.
☀️ Sunny Day
The best time to ski the four valleys from end to end, something that's impossible in the wind. Sunscreen and sunglasses: at 2,000 m the radiation is high even in January.
🌫️ Fog in the Valley
It's common for Sallent de Gállego or Escarrilla to wake up under cloud while it's sunny up top. Before writing the day off, check the high-altitude webcam.
🌧️ Rain at Low Altitude
With high temperatures the snow line rises and it can rain at the base while it snows up top. It's the day to wear truly waterproof clothing and focus your skiing on the higher slopes.
📅 The Best Time to Go to Formigal, Weather-Wise
- December: fewer people and lower prices, although the snow base is still building up.
- January and February: the best snow quality of the year and the best chances of powder. Also the windiest days.
- March: the balance: a good base, long days and milder temperatures. Hard snow in the morning and spring snow in the afternoon.
- April: spring skiing, fewer crowds and sunshine; it pays to start early because the snow softens quickly.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions About the Weather in Formigal
What's the weather like in Formigal today?
The widget at the top of this page shows the temperature, snow depth, open kilometres and running lifts in real time, using official resort data. The webcams give you visual confirmation of the sky.
Why do lifts close in Formigal when the weather isn't bad?
Almost always because of wind. Formigal has very exposed high areas, and the uncovered lifts stop in strong gusts even when it's sunny and the snow is good. The Sextas and Sarrios valleys usually stay open.
What's the temperature in Formigal in winter?
There's usually a 5–7 °C difference between the base (1,145 m) and the top (2,250 m), and wind can make it feel much colder up high. Dress in layers.
When does Formigal have the best snow?
January and February bring the best cold-snow conditions. Its mostly north-facing orientation means the snow keeps well throughout the season.
If there's fog in the valley, is there fog on the slopes too?
Not necessarily. Fog tends to sit at the bottom of the Valle de Tena while the sun shines up top. Check the high-altitude webcam before writing the day off.
Which Formigal valley is best in bad weather?
Sextas and Sarrios: they are the valleys most sheltered from the wind and have a good share of the blue runs, so they're the best option when the upper slopes or the Portalet area are difficult.
