Beech Mountain: the highest in the East
Beech Mountain tops out at 5,505 ft, the highest ski area in eastern North America, and the snow holds up better when the valley warms. Around 15 slopes, terrain parks and a tubing area, above Banner Elk and half an hour from Boone.
Sugar Mountain: the biggest vertical
Sugar Mountain has about 1,200 ft of vertical, North Carolina's largest, over some 20 slopes. It is the pick for confident skiers after long runs, next to Banner Elk and 15 minutes from Beech.
Appalachian Ski Mountain: to learn
App Ski Mtn is small and family-run: a dozen short slopes, three terrain parks and about 365 ft of vertical. It sits between Boone and Blowing Rock, roughly 10 minutes from each, and is the easiest first day on snow for kids.
