Skiing in Kirchberg in Tirol: KitzSki Without Paying Kitzbühel Prices

Pistas de KitzSki sobre Kirchberg in Tirol

Caranva Sports. |

Kirchberg in Tirol shares its ski area with Kitzbühel (the same 234 kilometres) but is considerably cheaper for sleeping, eating and renting equipment. Here is what you need to know before booking the 2026/27 season.

What Kirchberg in Tirol is and why it is worth a look

Kirchberg is a Tyrolean valley village at 837 metres, barely six kilometres from Kitzbühel. The important difference is not the snow: both ski exactly the same ski area, KitzSki. It is the price of everything else. Kitzbühel is an international brand with international-brand prices; Kirchberg is the village next door, with the same lifts right on the street.

The lifts up to the Pengelstein start from the village itself, and it connects with the rest of the ski area via the run across to Jochberg. In other words: you do not need to go to Kitzbühel to ski Kitzbühel.

The ski area: 234 km and 57 lifts

KitzSki brings together 234 kilometres of slopes and 57 lifts between 800 and 1,996 metres on the Kitzbüheler Horn, the highest point served by a lift. The sectors worth knowing:

  • Pengelstein: the gateway from Kirchberg and the link to the rest of the ski area.
  • Hahnenkamm: the mountain of the Streif, with the longest descents down to the valley.
  • Kitzbüheler Horn: south-facing, with wide slopes and the most open panoramic views.
  • Resterhöhe: the highest sector and the first to open each season.
  • Bichlalm: small and separate, for freeride and ski touring, with no groomed slopes.

You can check the actual snow conditions before you set off on the Kirchberg and KitzSki webcams, which include the Pengelstein cam and the Hahnenkamm panoramas.

When the 2026/27 season opens

KitzSki gets going on 6 November 2026 on the Resterkogel, which is where the snow settles first. The Kirchberg sector opens later, with the district's season: from 5 December 2026 to 29 March 2027. If you travel in November, expect to ski up high with the village still quiet.

Hahnenkamm week: 18 to 24 January 2027

The 87th Hahnenkamm race takes place from 18 to 24 January 2027 on the Streif. It is the most expensive and busiest weekend of the winter in the whole valley, and that is worth knowing either way: if you are going for the atmosphere, book many months ahead; if you want to ski in peace, avoid those dates and pick the week before or after.

Lift pass

A KitzSki day lift pass costs around €79.50 and is valid for the whole ski area, whether you buy it in Kirchberg or Kitzbühel. Prices for multi-day, season and family passes are on the official KitzSki lift pass page, and the comparison with other Austrian ski resorts is on our Kirchberg lift pass page.

Equipment rental in the village

In Kirchberg we work with Sports Kirchberg, which has two shops in the village: the one on the Dorfplatz, right in the centre, and the one on the Möselgasse, open during the winter season. You book online and pick up there, with no early-morning queues.

  • Adult full set (skis, poles and boots): from €31/day, €161/week.
  • Skis and poles only: from €18/day.
  • Children's full set: from €16/day, €79/week.
  • Full snowboard set: from €33/day.
  • Helmet: €5/day. Snowshoes: €10. Sledge: from €8.75.

So, Kirchberg or Kitzbühel?

If you are going to ski, Kirchberg almost always wins: same ski area, same lift pass, same 234 kilometres, and cheaper accommodation and equipment. Kitzbühel wins if what you are after is the historic old town, the shops and the après atmosphere, or if you are going precisely for the race.

All the resort information (altitudes, sectors, webcams, dates and ski school) is on the Kirchberg in Tirol page. And if you are deciding on a country, here we explain how to ski in Austria from Spain.
