Encamp Weather: Climate and Snow from the Village to Solanelles

Caranva Sports. |

The weather in Encamp is more deceptive than at any other access point to Grandvalira. The village sits at the bottom of the valley, but the slopes start at Solanelles, at 2,500 metres, after a 6 km ride on the Funicamp. The weather can be completely different between the bottom and the top. In this guide we explain what the weather in Encamp is like through the season, what to check before you go up and where to find the official snow report and live webcams.

What the Weather Is Like in Encamp

Encamp is the Grandvalira sector closest to Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany and the first access to the ski area when arriving from Spain. You go up on the Funicamp, a 6 km funitel that links the village with Solanelles, at 2,500 metres above sea level, in about 15 minutes. From there you ski across to the rest of the sectors of a ski area with 215 skiable km.

That ride up explains almost everything you need to know about the weather in Encamp. It can be raining in the village while it snows at Solanelles; there can be fog in the valley and sunshine above it; and a windless day down below can come with strong gusts up top. Solanelles is a high, open area, so wind and visibility have a big influence on how the day will go.

Another practical consequence: the whole day depends on the Funicamp. Like any lift, it can be affected by a severe storm, so check that it is running before you leave the hotel.

Encamp Weather by Season

December: Start of the Season

Grandvalira plans to open the 2026/27 season on 4 December, always subject to the weather and snow. At first not everything is usually open; the resort states that its snow cannons cover 66% of the area, which helps it get going even if little snow has fallen. It is common for there to be no snow in the village while skiing is already under way up top.

January and February: Midwinter

These are usually the coldest months, with the best-preserved snow at high altitude. This is also when storms with wind and fog can hit Solanelles. If the day turns ugly up top, it may make more sense to move towards sectors with forest slopes, as long as the connections are open.

March and April: Spring

Longer, sunnier days. The altitude of Solanelles helps the snow last longer than on the lower slopes of the ski area, although it softens in the afternoon. It pays to go up early. Grandvalira's planned closing date is 4 April 2027, also depending on the snow.

What to Check Before Going Up from Encamp

  • Funicamp: confirm that it is running, especially on windy days.
  • Wind and visibility at Solanelles: what you see in the village tells you nothing about conditions up top.
  • Connections between sectors: if they close because of wind, getting back to Encamp can become tricky; plan your return in good time.
  • Avalanche risk: essential if you plan to go off-piste.
  • Getting there: Encamp is about 10 minutes by car from Andorra la Vella on the CG-2, and you can also get there on bus line L2, without worrying about snow on the road.

Where to Check the Weather and Snow in Encamp

The official forecast is published by the Servei Meteorològic Nacional d'Andorra, which also issues the snow and avalanche danger bulletin by zone, with the fresh snow from the last 24 hours. For the resort, Grandvalira publishes the weather by sector, the slope status and the official webcams.
