If you are looking up the weather in El Tarter, it is because you have a ski trip in mind and want to know what you will find up top. Here you won't find a forecast that expires tomorrow, but rather how the weather and snow behave in this Grandvalira sector during the season, what to check before you set off and where to find the official snow report and live webcams.

What the Weather Is Like in El Tarter

El Tarter is one of the seven sectors of Grandvalira, in the parish of Canillo, and it shares its ski area with Soldeu. Grandvalira ranges from 1,710 to 2,640 metres in altitude, so the weather changes a lot between the base and the high areas: it can be cloudy and mild in the village while up top the wind is blowing and the wind chill is very low.

The slopes running down towards the village are largely lined with forest, which usually gives better visibility on foggy or snowy days than the open areas higher up. That is why, when the weather turns bad, people often stay and ski the mid and lower slopes of El Tarter and Soldeu.

El Tarter Weather by Season

Start of the Season: December

Grandvalira plans to open the 2026/27 season on 4 December, always subject to the weather and snow. In the first few weeks it is normal for not everything to be open and for the snow to depend partly on snowmaking: according to the resort itself, snow cannons cover 66% of the ski area's skiable surface. Before booking a December long weekend, check which slopes and lifts are actually running.

Midwinter: January and February

These are usually the coldest months and the snow keeps well, but storms can also move in with wind, fog and closures of some exposed lifts. After a snowfall, the next sunny day is often the best of the trip, so it is worth being flexible enough to move a ski day.

Spring: March and April

The days are longer and sunnier. The snow is hard first thing, softens as the morning goes on and can be heavy on the lower slopes in the afternoon. It pays to start early and look for the aspects and altitudes that keep the snow best. Grandvalira's planned closing date is 4 April 2027, also depending on the snow.

What to Check Before Going Up to El Tarter

  • Wind at high altitude: it is the most common reason for exposed chairlifts to close, even if you don't notice it in the village.
  • Visibility: in fog or heavy snowfall, forest slopes are a better option than open areas.
  • Fresh snow and avalanche risk: essential if you plan to go off-piste.
  • Road conditions: on snowy days, carry chains or use winter tyres and check the state of the CG-2 before you set off.
  • Open slopes and lifts: good weather does not guarantee that everything is open, especially at the start and end of the season.

Where to Check the Weather and Snow in El Tarter

The official source is the Servei Meteorològic Nacional d'Andorra. On its website you have the weather forecast for Andorra and the snow conditions and avalanche danger bulletin, which divides the country into three zones (north, centre and south) and records the fresh snow from the last 24 hours. Its network of automatic weather stations includes one in Soldeu, operating in winter only.

The resort publishes the weather by sector, with a specific section for Soldeu - El Tarter, and the Grandvalira slope status. To see what the mountain looks like at this moment, our El Tarter webcam shows the sector's camera live, and in the El Tarter snow report on our app we bring snow and forecast together on a single screen.

If you are still not sure which area of Andorra to go to, compare the weather in all of them in our guide Andorra weather: forecast, snow report and outlook by resort, or check the weather in Soldeu, the neighbouring village.
