To ski in Astún, pack clothes in layers (base layer, fleece, and a waterproof jacket and trousers), gloves, a hat or helmet, goggles and sunglasses, factor 30+ sun cream and ski socks. The base is at 1,658 m and the Ibones area goes above 2,000, so it's colder and windier up top. Skis, boots and helmets can be hired there; bring your clothing from home.
There's no need to bring the heavy gear: ski hire in Astún costs from €26 a day for a full adult set and €21 for a child's, and you pick it up from our shop 15 metres from the lifts at Astún ski resort, open from 8:45 to 17:00.
Clothing for skiing in Astún
- Base layer: technical top and leggings, never cotton, which gets wet and cold.
- Mid layer: a fleece or a light down jacket for the cold days from December to February.
- Waterproof ski jacket and trousers: a pair of jeans ends up soaked after an hour of falls and snow.
- Ski socks: long and thin. A thick sock makes the boot tight and painful.
- Waterproof gloves or mittens: mittens for children and for anyone with cold hands.
- Neck gaiter or balaclava and a hat: you don't need the hat under your helmet, but you do for time off the slopes.
In March and April, when the season runs on (in 2025/26 Astún stayed open until 6 April), you can leave the fleece behind: the base layer and jacket are enough, and sun cream becomes the most important item.
Protection: goggles, sun cream and helmet
The resort itself insists on three things: proper sunglasses, factor 30 or higher sun protection for your face, and a helmet, which is not compulsory but recommended. At 2,000 m the snow reflects a lot of sun even when it's cloudy. Also bring ski goggles for foggy or snowy days, and lip balm.

If you're going with children
For the snow garden (ages 1 to 6) the resort asks for a change of clothes, snow clothing, gloves, a hat, goggles and sun cream for the outdoor area, and comfortable shoes for indoors, all labelled with the child's name. With children, a full change of clothes in the car can save the day.
For the car and the day at the resort
- Snow chains or winter tyres: when it snows, the DGT (Spanish traffic authority) may require them on the N-330a. Check the Astún webcams before you set off.
- Lift pass card: in Astún the lift pass is loaded onto a non-refundable €3 card. Keep it: it can be reloaded on your next trip.
- Parking: the resort lets you book a space from €5 a day.
- Ski lockers: if you're staying several days, the resort has lockers at the base with boot dryers, so you don't have to carry your gear back every afternoon.
- Small backpack: water, something to eat, sun cream and an extra layer.
