Sallent de Gállego for Skiers: Where to Stay, Eat and Get Up to Formigal

Sallent de Gállego para esquiadores: dormir, comer y subir a Formigal

Caranva Sports. |

Actualizado 4 min de lectura

Lots of people looking at Formigal end up looking at Sallent de Gállego, and it makes sense: the resort and the village are in the same municipality, about 11 minutes apart by car, and Sallent offers a mountain-village atmosphere that the Formigal development doesn't have. In this guide we explain how to get up to the slopes from Sallent, what to keep in mind when staying and eating there, and how to sort out your equipment. If you already have dates, book your ski rental in Formigal from €25/day for a full adult set and pick it up the evening before, on your way to Sallent.

Sallent and Formigal, the same municipality

Formigal isn't a municipality in its own right. According to the Huesca Provincial Council, Sallent de Gállego has Escarrilla, Formigal, Frontera de Portalet, Lanuza, Sandiniés and Tramacastilla de Tena as associated settlements. In other words, when you book in "Formigal" you're within the municipal boundaries of Sallent, and so is a good part of the upper Tena valley, all the way to the French border.

The difference lies in the altitude and the kind of place. The village of Sallent sits at 1,305 metres, at the head of the Lanuza reservoir and below the Peña Foratata, according to its town council, and its old quarter keeps several stately stone buildings. Formigal, on the other hand, is a development at 1,550 metres built at the foot of the resort. If you stay in Formigal you gain minutes in the morning; if you stay in Sallent you gain village atmosphere.

How to get from Sallent to the Formigal slopes

By car

According to Aramón, it takes about 11 minutes to cover the 10.5 kilometres from Sallent to the resort on the A-136 road. It's the same road that continues on to the Portalet, so on snowy days it's worth checking its condition first: the Formigal webcam includes traffic cameras on the A-136. Once up there, you have parking at the Sextas, Sarrios, Anayet and Portalet access points.

On the resort's free bus

Formigal-Panticosa runs a free bus between its two sectors, stopping in Escarrilla, and some departures go via Sallent. In the 2025/26 season, the buses that stopped in Sallent left for Formigal at 8:20 and 9:35, and the return buses left Formigal at 14:00 and 17:00, passing through Sallent at 14:15 and 17:15. There aren't many services, so if you rely on the bus, plan your day around those times, and check the 2026/27 timetable when the resort publishes it.

Once in Formigal, another free service links the development (stop at the clock in the square) with the Sextas and Anayet access points all day long.

Staying in Sallent or in the Formigal development

The choice depends on how you want to experience the trip:

  • Sallent de Gállego: village atmosphere, a stone old town and views of the reservoir. In return, every morning you have to take the car or fit in with the bus timetable.
  • Formigal development: close to the access points and with the free bus to Sextas and Anayet, ideal with children or if you want to be among the first on the lift.
  • Other villages in the valley: Escarrilla, Tramacastilla de Tena or Panticosa let you split your days between the two sectors of the ski area.

Eating and spending the afternoon in Sallent

One advantage of staying in the village is the afternoon: when you come down from the slopes you can have dinner in Sallent without getting back in the car and stroll around the old quarter. If you come back in summer, Lanuza, on the shores of the reservoir and in the same municipality, hosts the Pirineos Sur world cultures festival in July.

For lunch on the slopes, every access area of the resort (Sextas, Sarrios, Anayet and Portalet) has a café at the foot of the slopes, which you can also reach by car.

Equipment sorted before you reach Sallent

If you're staying in Sallent, the most practical thing is not having to stop at the shop every morning:

  • Pick up the evening before. The pick-up shop is in Formigal (Av. de Huesca, 5) and lets you collect your equipment from the day before, so you can do it when you arrive in the valley.
  • Add the ski helmet in Formigal to the same booking.
  • Lessons. If someone is just starting, book ski lessons in Formigal; the school has offices in Sextas and Anayet.
  • Lift pass. Buy the Formigal lift pass online and go straight to the lift.
  • Today's snow. Check the Formigal snow report before leaving Sallent.
