Zermatt at a glance
Zermatt sits in the Swiss canton of Valais at the foot of the Matterhorn, and the village is closed to cars. Its ski area, the Matterhorn Ski Paradise, has around 360 km of pistes (74 km blue, 227 km red, 20 km black and 36 km of yellow freeride runs) and 52 lifts between 1,620 and 3,899 m — a 2,279 m vertical drop. According to Zermatt Bergbahnen it is the highest ski area in the Alps, and with the International lift pass you can ski over to Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche in Italy.
Beginners have Wolli's Beginners Park on Sunnegga and the signposted "Slow Slopes" (runs 5, 6 and 7 on Rothorn, 38 on Gornergrat and 56 at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise). Experts can take on run 8, "Obere National", with a maximum gradient of 61%, and the descent from Matterhorn Glacier Paradise to the village drops 2,263 m in one go.
2026/27 season: winter starts on 1 November 2026 on the glacier; the Sunnegga-Rothorn and Gornergrat areas open on 28 November 2026 and close on 11 and 18 April 2027, and the season ends on 3 May 2027.
We don't sell the lift pass: you buy it at matterhornparadise.ch, with dynamic pricing that rises with demand. A 1-day pass costs from CHF 89 (Zermatt) or CHF 104 (International, with Cervinia) and a 6-day pass from CHF 384 or CHF 432; the lowest prices apply from 1 to 27 November 2026 and from 19 April to 2 May 2027. Children up to 8.99 years don't pay for a pass, ages 9 to 15.99 pay half, and on Saturdays under-16s pay nothing for the Zermatt pass.
