At Lake Tahoe you pick a shore: Palisades Tahoe and Northstar are on the north shore near Truckee, Heavenly on the south shore straddling California and Nevada. This guide compares them and explains how to get ski gear delivered to your lodging.
The three resorts at a glance
| Resort | Shore | Elevation | Best for | Rentals |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Palisades Tahoe | North (Olympic Valley) | 6,200–9,050 ft | Advanced terrain; linked with Alpine Meadows | Palisades Tahoe ski rentals |
| Northstar | North (Truckee) | 6,330–8,610 ft | Families; sheltered from the wind | Northstar ski rentals |
| Heavenly | South (South Lake Tahoe) | 6,660–10,070 ft | Lake views and a lively town | South Lake Tahoe ski rentals |
Palisades Tahoe
Host of the 1960 Winter Olympics and linked by lift to Alpine Meadows, it has the most technical terrain on the lake. It sits in Olympic Valley, about 15 minutes from Truckee.
Northstar
The most family-friendly of the three and the most sheltered: when the wind closes Palisades' ridges, Northstar usually keeps spinning. It lies between Truckee and the north shore.
Heavenly
On the south shore, with runs on both sides of the California–Nevada line and lake views from almost all of them. The highest of the three, up to 10,070 ft, and the one with the most town life after skiing.
