When I decided to organize a getaway to Sierra Nevada, I had in mind a trip full of adventure, adrenaline, and total disconnection. I had never been to this iconic ski resort in southern Spain, and what I experienced far exceeded my expectations. If you're thinking about taking a trip to Sierra Nevada, here I'll tell you about my experience and why I encourage you to live yours.
Arriving at Sierra Nevada: The Beginning of the Adventure
The journey to Sierra Nevada already hinted at the adventure. I was coming from Granada, a city that welcomes you with a unique mix of history and culture, but as you get closer to the mountains, the air becomes fresher and the landscape changes radically. The winding road to the resort is full of breathtaking views, and each turn seems to reveal a new panorama even more impressive. I knew I was about to experience something special.
Upon arrival, the first thing that caught my attention was the altitude. We're talking about one of Europe's highest ski resorts, with Pico Veleta looming majestically at 3.398 meters. Barely got out of the car and the cold, crisp air wakes you up instantly. From the very first moment, I felt that energy that only comes from being high in the mountains.
Skiing and Snowboarding: Challenge in the Snow
My first day at Sierra Nevada was dedicated to a must-do activity: skiing. Although I'm not an expert, I hold my own pretty well, and Sierra Nevada's slopes offer options for all levels. I launched myself on some blue runs to warm up, and gradually worked up the courage to try a red run.
The incredible thing about skiing here is that you not only enjoy the sport, but also the amazing views. On clear days, you can see as far as the Mediterranean Sea from some slopes. It was surreal to be skiing, surrounded by snow, with the deep blue of the sea as a backdrop.
If you're more adventurous, the Sulayr snowpark is a must-visit. There I had my first serious experience with jumps and freestyle modules. I won't lie, I fell a few times (and in pretty comical ways), but that feeling of overcoming yourself by trying again and again is part of the adventure. It's like an adrenaline game where every achievement, no matter how small, feels incredible.
Beyond skiing: Adventure Activities
One of the aspects that surprised me most about Sierra Nevada is that there's much more than skiing and snowboarding. On the second day, after an intense session on the slopes, I decided to try something different: snowmobiles. It was wild.
The snowmobile tour took me through snowy valleys and hidden paths that you normally don't see if you just stick to the slopes. The feeling of speed and control, cutting through those mountain landscapes in the middle of the silence of the snow, was impressive. There's something special about hearing only the sound of the engine and watching the snow slide beneath your feet.
I also had the opportunity to do a hike with snowshoes, a completely different experience. At first I thought it would be more relaxing, but walking through deep snow requires more effort than I imagined. Still, the views are worth every step, and if you like landscape photography, this is the place to capture images that look like they're from a postcard.
Après-Ski: Relaxation and Good Vibes
After a day full of adrenaline, nothing beats relaxing in one of the resort's bars or restaurants. The atmosphere is very laid-back, with people from all over enjoying a beer or good wine after a day in the snow.
One of my favorite stops was La Bodega, a cozy little bar where I tried some traditional Andalusian tapas accompanied by a glass of local wine. It was the perfect contrast between the harshness of the day in the mountains and the warmth of the evening atmosphere.
If you prefer something more lively, there are bars with live music and outdoor parties where the fun doesn't stop. I opted for a more relaxed plan, but there are no shortage of options for those looking for a more upbeat après-ski.
Where to Sleep: The Pleasure of Resting with a View
The choice of accommodation in Sierra Nevada depends on the type of experience you're looking for. I stayed at a boutique hotel in the Pradollano area, right at the foot of the slopes. Waking up, opening the window, and seeing snowy mountains in front of you is something that's priceless. Plus, being just steps away from the slopes lets you make the most of the day without wasting time on transfers.
Some friends I met on the trip chose to stay in cabins further away, surrounded by nature, which also has its charm. It all depends on whether you prefer comfort and convenience or a more adventurous touch to your accommodation.
Why Would I Return to Sierra Nevada?
One thing became clear to me on this trip: Sierra Nevada has something for everyone. Whether you're an adventurer looking for adrenaline or someone who just wants to disconnect and enjoy nature, this place offers you a unique experience. Personally, I can't wait to go back, especially after being left wanting to try more routes and maybe visit in summer to enjoy the greener side of the mountain.
If you've never been to Sierra Nevada, I invite you to dare. Get ready to glide down its slopes, lose yourself in its landscapes, and enjoy the pure essence of the mountain.
