Las Trancas in winter: what to do, where to stay, and how to get there

Caranva Sports |

Las Trancas is the gateway valley to Nevados de Chillán and one of the most complete mountain destinations in Chile. In winter, it transforms: snow, hot springs, slopes, and a mountain atmosphere that captivates from day one.

If you are planning your trip, this guide gives you everything you need to know before arriving.

Where is Las Trancas?

Las Trancas is located in the Biobío Region, about 80 km southeast of the city of Chillán. The main access is via Route Q-61, which climbs from Pinto up to the valley. It is the gateway to the Nevados de Chillán ski resort.

What to do in Las Trancas in winter

  • Skiing at Nevados de Chillán: 35 km of slopes, 13 lifts, and the longest run in South America (Las Tres Marías, 13 km). Suitable for all levels.
  • Termas de Chillán: natural hot springs within the resort complex. Perfect for recovering after a day in the snow.
  • Snowshoeing: guided routes through the native forest covered in snow.
  • Freeride and off-piste: a highly valued area by advanced skiers for its varied terrain.
  • Snowpark: facilities for freestyle and snowboarding.

Where to stay in Las Trancas

The valley offers a wide range of accommodation for all budgets:

  • Cabins: the most popular option for groups and families. Many include equipped kitchens and fireplaces.
  • Hotels and lodges: from basic options to accommodations with spa and heated pool.
  • Inside the resort: the Hotel Nevados de Chillán offers direct access to the slopes, ideal if you prioritize convenience.

Recommendation: book at least 4-6 weeks in advance during high season (July-August). Demand is very high and prices rise considerably.

How to get to Las Trancas

From Santiago

Approximately 5-6 hours by car via Route 5 South to Chillán, then via Route Q-61 to Las Trancas. You can also take a bus to Chillán and from there hire a transfer or local bus.

From Concepción

About 2.5-3 hours by car. It is the closest city with an airport (Carriel Sur Airport). A good option if you fly from abroad.

From Chillán

About 80 km and 1.5 hours by car via Route Q-61. There are bus and transfer services from the city during the season.

Practical tips for your trip

  • Bring snow chains if you are driving your own car — they may be mandatory on some uphill sections.
  • Check the snow report before leaving: conditions change quickly.
  • Reserve ski equipment in advance to avoid queues upon arrival at the resort.
  • High season is July and August. June and September offer fewer crowds and lower prices.
