Las Trancas is the access valley to Nevados de Chillán and one of Chile's most complete mountain destinations. In winter it transforms: snow, hot springs, slopes and a mountain atmosphere that captivates from day one.

If you're planning your trip, this guide gives you everything you need to know before arriving.

Where is Las Trancas?

Las Trancas is located in the Biobío Region, about 80 km southeast of Chillán city. The main access is via Route Q-61, which climbs from Pinto to the valley. It's the gateway to Nevados de Chillán ski resort.

What to do in Las Trancas in winter

  • Skiing at Nevados de Chillán: 35 km of slopes, 13 lifts and the longest slope in South America (Las Tres Marías, 13 km). For all levels.
  • Chillán Hot Springs: natural hot springs within the resort complex. Perfect for recovering after a day in the snow.
  • Snowshoeing and snowshoe trails: guided routes through native forest with snow.
  • Freeride and off-piste: area highly valued by advanced skiers for its varied terrain.
  • Snowpark: freestyle and snowboard facilities.

Where to stay in Las Trancas

The valley offers a wide range of accommodation for all budgets:

  • Cabins: the most popular option for groups and families. Many include equipped kitchen and fireplace.
  • Hotels and lodges: from basic options to accommodations with spa and heated pool.
  • Within the resort: Nevados de Chillán Hotel offers direct access to the slopes, ideal if you prioritize comfort.

Recommendation: book at least 4-6 weeks in advance in peak season (July-August). Demand is very high and prices increase considerably.

How to get to Las Trancas

From Santiago

Approximately 5-6 hours by car via Route 5 South to Chillán, then via Route Q-61 to Las Trancas. You can also take a bus to Chillán and from there hire a transfer or local bus.

From Concepción

About 2.5-3 hours by car. It's the closest city with an airport (Carriel Sur Airport). Good option if flying from abroad.

From Chillán

About 80 km and 1.5 hours by car via Route Q-61. There are bus services and transfers from the city in season.

Practical tips for your trip

  • Bring snow chains if driving your own car — they may be mandatory on sections of the climb.
  • Check the snow report before leaving: conditions change quickly.
  • Book ski equipment in advance to avoid waiting in line when you arrive at the resort.
  • Peak season is July and August. June and September offer less crowding and lower prices.
