Skiing in Berchtesgaden: Rossfeld, Götschen and Jenner
Berchtesgaden, in the far south-east of Bavaria right on the border with Salzburg, has 44 km of pistes across five ski areas between 600 and 1,550 m, according to the Berchtesgaden tourist board. It is not one linked resort but several small areas, each with its own character:
- Rossfeld (835–1,550 m): the highest area and the one that relies on natural snow only. Four drag lifts, wide pistes, a 6 km run down to Oberau and a link to the Austrian Zinken area: with the Oberau–Rossfeld–Zinken pass that makes 15 km of pistes. You drive up on the Rossfeld-Panoramastraße, a toll road.
- Götschen (880–1,307 m), Bischofswiesen: a three-seater chairlift and two drag lifts, snowmaking down to the valley, a red FIS run (1,800 m), a blue family run (2,600 m) and the black run down to Bischofswiesen (3,700 m). Floodlit skiing on Fridays from 18:00 to 21:00. For 2026/27 it plans to open from mid-December 2026 to mid-March 2027, 9:00 to 16:00.
- Jenner (Schönau am Königssee): the Jennerbahn gondola climbs to 1,200 and 1,800 m, but no pistes are groomed here: there is a signed ski route which, in good snow, is recommended only for genuinely experienced skiers, plus freeride and ski-touring terrain. In winter it runs on 5–6 and 12–13 December 2026 and daily from 18 December.
- Obersalzberg (Skigebiet am Gutshof, 900–1,050 m) and Hochschwarzeck in Ramsau (1,030–1,385 m): family areas with easy slopes, ideal for learning.
Which one suits you? The Rossfeld for more vertical and views over the Salzburg valley; the Götschen with children or for night skiing; Obersalzberg and Hochschwarzeck for your first days on skis; the Jenner only if you have off-piste experience.
