Ski and Snow Pants: Your Essential Protection on the Slopes

If your jacket is your shield, your ski pants are your armor. They're the garment that withstands direct contact with the snow, the friction with the edges of your skis, and keeps you insulated from the cold when you sit on the chairlift. Choosing good snow pants is essential to ensure warmth, dryness, and complete freedom of movement with every turn. At Caranva Sports, we've selected pants that pass the most demanding tests.

Men's Ski Pants

Designed for performance and durability. The men's ski pants in our collection offer athletic cuts and reinforced fabrics that withstand the toughest conditions. With pre-shaped knees and thoughtful ergonomics, they'll allow you to ski powerfully and without restrictions.

Women's Ski Pants

Functionality and style come together in our selection of women's ski pants . Find everything from slim-fitting styles that flatter your figure to more relaxed options, all equipped with the best insulation and waterproof membranes to keep you comfortable and safe on the mountain.

Ski Pants for Kids

Protection comes first for little skiers. Children's ski pants must be extremely durable, warm, and highly waterproof. Our children's range includes adjustable straps, reinforcements in key areas, and stretch systems to accommodate their growth throughout the season.

Guide to Choosing Your Ideal Ski Pants

The same technical principles for a jacket apply to pants. Pay attention to these three factors to make a smart purchase.

1. Waterproofing and Breathability: The Essential Duo

When you're in constant contact with snow, waterproofing is crucial. As with jackets, look for a minimum of 10,000 mm water column to ensure you stay dry. Breathability (minimum 10,000 g/m²/24h) is equally important to wick away sweat during exercise and prevent you from feeling cold from internal moisture.

2. Insulation: Insulated or Shell Pants?

  • Insulated Pants: These are the most common and recommended option for most piste skiers. They feature synthetic fiber filling that provides constant warmth without the need for multiple layers underneath.
  • Shell Pants (without padding): These are simply a waterproof and breathable outer layer. They offer maximum versatility, as you can regulate heat with thermal tights underneath. They're ideal for backcountry skiing or spring skiing.

3. The Cut and Fit: Bib or Waistband Pants?

This is one of the most important decisions. Both options are excellent, but they respond to different needs.

Type of Pants Advantages Ideal for...
Bib Pants Maximum protection against snow entry, keeps the lower back warm, never falls off, and usually has extra pockets. Off-piste (freeride) skiers, days with lots of powder snow, and people who are sensitive to the cold.
Waist Pants Easier to put on and take off, greater ventilation in the torso, more versatile to combine. Piste skiers, good-weather skiers, and those looking for a more versatile look.

Features that Can't Be Missing in Your Snow Pants

Quality pants are recognized by their details. Before you decide, check that they include:

  • Inner gaiters: A stretchy lining at the bottom that fits over the boot to keep snow out. It's a non-negotiable detail!
  • - Reinforcements at the bottom: Ultra-resistant fabric panels on the inside of the ankle to protect the pants from cuts caused by ski edges. - Ventilation zippers: Usually on the inner or outer side of the thighs, they allow heat to escape quickly. - Preformed knees: The cut of the pants is articulated at the knee to offer a more natural and comfortable flex. - Adjustable waist: Velcro or elastic straps allow for a perfect fit without the need for a belt.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ski Pants

Can I ski in trekking pants or mountain raincoats?

This isn't the most recommended option. Even if mountain pants are waterproof, they lack three key elements: 1) Thermal insulation to protect you from the cold on the chairlift; 2) Gaiters to prevent snow from entering your boots in a fall; and 3) Reinforcements at the bottom to protect them from edge cuts.

Are ski pants and snowboard pants different?

Yes, they often differ in fit. Snowboard pants are traditionally wider and baggy to facilitate movement and tricks. They often have reinforcements in the seat and knees. Ski pants have a more athletic and fitted cut (slim or regular fit).

How should I choose my ski pants size?

Your ideal size is the one that allows you to comfortably wear a thermal tight underneath and perform a deep squat without feeling like the pants are pinching or restricting your movement. They shouldn't be too loose to avoid snagging, nor too tight. If you're between sizes, it's usually better to choose the larger one.
