Ski and Snow Pants: Your Essential Protection on the Slopes
If the jacket is your shield, the ski pants are your armor. It's the garment that supports direct contact with snow, rubbing against ski edges and keeps you insulated from cold when sitting on the chairlift. Choosing good snow pants is essential to guarantee your warmth, keep you dry and ensure total freedom of movement in every turn. At Caranva Sports we have selected pants that pass the most demanding tests.
Ski Pants for Men
Designed for performance and durability. The men's ski pants in our collection offer athletic cuts and reinforced fabrics that withstand the harshest conditions. With preformed knees and studied ergonomics, they will allow you to ski with power and without restrictions.
Ski Pants for Women
Functionality and style come together in our selection of women's ski pants. Find everything from fitted-cut models that slim your figure to more relaxed options, all equipped with the best insulation and waterproof membranes so you feel comfortable and safe on the mountain.
Ski Pants for Children
Protection is the priority for young skiers. Children's ski pants must be extremely durable, warm and very waterproof. Our children's range includes adjustable suspenders, reinforcements in key areas and systems to lengthen the garment, adapting to their growth during the season.
Guide to Choosing Your Ideal Ski Pants
The same technical principles of a jacket apply to pants. Pay attention to these three factors to make a smart purchase.
1. Waterproofing and Breathability: The Essential Duo
Being in constant contact with snow, waterproofing is crucial. As with jackets, look for a minimum of 10.000 mm water column to ensure you stay dry. Breathability (minimum 10.000 g/m²/24h) is equally important to evacuate sweat during effort and not feel cold from internal moisture.
2. Insulation: Pants with Padding (Insulated) or without Padding (Shell)?
- Insulated Pants: The most common and recommended option for most piste skiers. They have synthetic fiber padding that provides constant warmth without needing many layers underneath.
- Shell Pants (unpadded): Just a waterproof and breathable outer layer. They offer maximum versatility, as you can regulate heat with the thermal tights you wear underneath. They are ideal for ski touring or spring skiing.
3. Cut and Fit: Bib Pants or Waist Pants?
This is one of the most important decisions. Both options are excellent, but they respond to different needs.
| Pants Type | Advantages | Ideal for... |
|---|---|---|
| Bib Pants | Maximum protection against snow entry, keeps the lower back always warm, never slip off, usually have extra pockets. | Off-piste skiers (freeride), days with lots of powder and people who feel the cold easily. |
| Waist Pants | Easier to put on and take off, better ventilation on the torso, more versatile to mix and match. | Piste skiers, nice weather days and those looking for a more versatile look. |
Features That Can't Be Missing in Your Snow Pants
Quality pants are recognized by their details. Before deciding, check that they include:
- Inner gaiters: An elastic lining at the bottom that adjusts over the boot to prevent snow from entering. It's a non-negotiable detail! - Lower reinforcements: Panels of ultra-resistant fabric on the inside of the ankle to protect the pants from cuts with ski edges. - Ventilation zippers: Usually on the inside or outside of the thighs, they allow heat to escape quickly. - Preformed knees: The pants cut is articulated at the knee to offer more natural and comfortable bending. - Adjustable waist: Velcro straps or elastics that allow a perfect fit without needing a belt.
Frequently Asked Questions about Ski Pants
Can I ski with trekking or mountain waterproof pants?
It's not the most advisable. Although mountain pants are waterproof, they lack three key elements: 1) Thermal insulation to protect you from cold on the chairlift; 2) Gaiters to prevent snow from entering your boots in a fall; and 3) Lower reinforcements to protect them from ski edge cuts.
Are ski and snowboard pants different?
Yes, they usually have differences in the cut. Snowboard pants are traditionally wider and "baggy" in style to facilitate movements and tricks. They often have reinforcements on the butt and knees. Ski pants have a more athletic and fitted cut (slim or regular fit).
How should I choose my ski pants size?
Your ideal size is one that allows you to comfortably wear thermal tights underneath and perform a deep squat without feeling the pants tight or limiting your movement. They shouldn't be too wide to avoid snagging, nor too tight. If in doubt between two sizes, it's usually better to choose the larger one.
