What to do in Astún besides skiing?

¿Qué hacer en Astún además de esquiar?

Caranva Sports. |

In Astún, besides skiing, you can go sledging in the area at the base (weekends and public holidays, €13 for a single sledge), head out on snowshoes, watch the snowpark from the Sarrios Lounge or have lunch on the terrace of Los Ibones, at 2,150 m next to the Ibón de Truchas lake. In the valley you have Candanchú a free bus ride away, the old Canfranc international railway station, the Cueva de las Güixas cave and the citadel of Jaca.

If your group includes both skiers and non-skiers, the base makes it easy: everything is less than 5 minutes from the car park. Anyone who wants to give it a go can book ski hire in Astún (full set from €26 a day) and pick it up from our shop, 15 metres from the lifts at Astún ski resort.

At the resort

Sledging area

It's at the base, next to the beginners' magic carpet, and opens at weekends and on public holidays from 11:00 to 16:00. The resort lends the sledges (you can't use your own plastic ones): in 2025/26 a single sledge cost €13 and a double one €26, plus a €15 refundable deposit. It's for children up to 14, and those under 120 cm ride a double sledge with an adult.

Snowshoeing

The technical sheet for the Astún-Candanchú ski area includes a snowshoe trail. You can hire snowshoes from us in Astún for €20 a day, in the same booking as the rest of your equipment. Before heading off-piste, check the snow report and the avalanche risk, and don't go alone.

Snowpark

Astún has a snowpark with jumps, rails and features for beginners and experts, maintained by a team of shapers. It opens from 9:00 to 16:30 at weekends, snow permitting. Even if you don't use it, you get a good view of it from the Sarrios Lounge, just below.

Eating and drinking on the slopes

  • La Moleta: at the base, next to the lift access, with a terrace and self-service.
  • Sarrios Lounge: next to the Sarrios I and II drag lifts, with a terrace, from 9 to 16 h.
  • Casa Vero Los Ibones: terrace at 2,150 m next to the Ibón de Truchas lake, at the top of the Truchas chairlift; open at weekends and on public holidays.
  • Terraza Midi and Picaubé: around the hotel at the base.

In Candanchú and the Aragón valley

Candanchú, by free shuttle

With the joint lift pass you can also ski in Candanchú, about 6.5 km away. The two resorts are linked by a free shuttle bus: in 2025/26 it left Astún every hour, from 9:35 to 16:35, with a break at midday. The future Astún-Candanchú gondola is under construction and will not run this winter: it is scheduled for the 2027/28 season. If you're going to ski there, there's also ski hire in Candanchú.

Canfranc

The old Canfranc international railway station, now converted into a hotel, is the classic visit in the valley. In Canfranc you can also visit the museum room of the Canfranc Underground Laboratory, which explains the scientific research carried out beneath the Pyrenees.

Villanúa and Jaca

  • Cueva de las Güixas (Villanúa): visited with a guide, and a good plan with children on a bad-weather day.
  • Jaca Citadel and Diocesan Museum: history and sacred art of the Pyrenees in the centre of Jaca.
  • Espace Somport: spa with a jacuzzi and sauna for after skiing.

Opening hours and prices at these places change with the season: check their websites before you go.

Before you drive up

Check the live Astún webcams to see the snow and the road: when it snows, the DGT (Spanish traffic authority) may require snow chains on the N-330a. If you hire from us, you collect without queuing, cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before and have the CaranvaSports Guarantee.
