Obertauern at a glance
Obertauern is in the Austrian state of Salzburg, on the border between the Pongau and the Lungau, surrounded by the peaks of the Radstadt Tauern; that bowl shape gives it its nickname, the “Schneeschüssel” (snow bowl). The ski area runs from 1,630 to 2,313 m, with more than 100 km of blue, red and black runs, 26 lifts and plenty of off-piste terrain. The lifts and slopes form a ring around the village: the Tauernrunde can be skied in two directions, the red circuit clockwise and the green one anticlockwise, without using the same lift twice. The Gamsleiten 2, at 45°, is one of the steepest runs in Europe.
It is Austria’s snowiest ski village: a study by ski-tourism researcher Günther Aigner, based on 30 years of measurements, gives it an average maximum snow depth of 264 cm, the highest of the places compared. On Mondays and Thursdays there is night skiing from 7 pm to 10 pm on the Edelweissbahn, on a floodlit run of about 1,500 m. For children there is Bobby Land at the Schaidberg and the Bibo Bär family ski park at the Edelweissbahn.
2026/27 season: opening is expected on 20 November 2026, snow permitting, and lift-pass prices run until 2 May 2027. The Skiopening Week with concerts takes place from 27 November to 8 December. You get there on the A10 Tauern motorway: from Munich and Salzburg take exit 63 (Radstadt) and the B99; from the south, exit 104 (St. Michael) and Mauterndorf. The nearest airports are Salzburg and Klagenfurt.
We don’t sell the lift pass: buy it from the online shop at obertauern.com or at the lift ticket offices. A 2026/27 adult day pass costs €72 (children €36, youth €54), and passes of 1.5 days or more are also valid at Grosseck-Speiereck in Mauterndorf, about 15 km away.
